Support

Nook is made by one person and there’s no ticket system: you write to the inbox and I answer, usually the same day. Before you do, these are the four things that actually go wrong, with the exact fix.

«macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware»

Expected, and not a sign of anything. Nook isn’t signed with a paid Apple developer certificate — that’s $99 a year for an app that costs €3.99 — so macOS can’t confirm who made it. To open it anyway:

• Click OK (or Done) on the warning.
• Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll to the bottom.
• There’s a line about Nook being blocked, with an Open Anyway button. Click it.
• Open Nook again and confirm. That’s the last you’ll see of it.

Nook says it can’t see my Downloads folder

You said «Don’t Allow» when macOS asked, or a system update reset it. Nook won’t pretend the folder is empty — it tells you it’s blocked, which is what you’re seeing. To fix it:

• System Settings › Privacy & Security › Files and Folders.
• Find Nook and switch on Downloads Folder and Desktop Folder.
• If Nook isn’t in the list at all, quit it and open it again — it asks on launch.

This can come back after an update. Because Nook isn’t signed with a paid certificate, macOS treats each build as a slightly different app and may ask again. Say yes again; nothing is wrong.

It’s renaming files but not reading inside them

That’s Nook’s fallback mode, and it says so on the home screen. It means the on-device model isn’t available. Three possible reasons:

• Apple Intelligence is off. Turn it on in System Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri. It’s free.
• The model is still downloading. The first time you enable it, macOS fetches a few gigabytes. Give it a while and reopen Nook.
• It’s an Intel Mac. Then it won’t ever be available — the model is part of Apple silicon. Write to me if you bought it not knowing this.

My licence key won’t activate

• Check you pasted the whole key, with no trailing space. Nook has a paste button in the licence window that handles this for you.
• Activating needs a connection — just that once. If you’re offline, or behind a VPN that blocks it, it’ll fail.
• One key activates three Macs. If you’ve replaced a machine and run out, write to me and I’ll free one up. It takes a minute.
• Lost the email? It’s sent by Lemon Squeezy the moment payment clears — check spam for the word «Nook». If it’s genuinely not there, email me the address you paid with and I’ll resend it.

Undoing something Nook did

⌘Z undoes the last file, putting it back on the exact path it came from with its old name. Beyond that, nothing is lost: files Nook filed are under your Nook folder (or wherever you pointed it in Settings), and files you sent to the Trash are in the Trash until you empty it. Nook never deletes anything itself and never overwrites a file that already exists — it numbers the new one instead.

Still stuck

Write to me and say what you were doing and what happened. If it’s a file Nook got wrong, the name of the file is usually enough — don’t send me the file itself.
